For the second consecutive year, the Ibiza Council has approved the designation of Ibiza as a temporary emergency hunting zone due to the overpopulation of wood pigeons (Columba palumbus). This has resulted in significant damage to the agricultural sector and poses a risk to air safety.

The wood pigeon population on Ibiza has grown considerably in recent years, threatening the island's crops, particularly cereals, vineyards and olive groves, and causing significant economic losses for farmers. This has been reported to the Consell by various agricultural organisations and farmers, who have requested the exceptional authorisations granted by the Consell's Hunting Service to control the damage caused by wood pigeons on agricultural estates. Given the widespread nature of this damage and the resulting increase in incidents at the airport, applying the temporary hunting emergency to reduce the wood pigeon population is considered appropriate.

The resolution, published in the Official Gazette of the Balearic Islands (BOIB) on Thursday, July 3rd, will allow the hunting of wood pigeon to start 35 days earlier within the hunting grounds.

Period: from 20 July to 24 August, linking with the general hunting period.

Days authorised for hunting control: 20, 24, 27 and 31 July; 3, 7, 10, 14, 17 and 21 August.

Permitted methods: hunting with shotgun or shotgun and dog.

Requirements for participation: the owners of the hunting grounds will have to communicate their membership before July 20th using the corresponding form.

At the end of the period, the hunting grounds must send the Consell a summary report of the catches made during this period.
