Excessive speed coupled with a distraction at the wheel were the trigger for the fatal accident that occurred on Wednesday afternoon on the access road to Santa Gertrudis. These are the two factors that emerge from the first investigations carried out by the Guardia Civil de Tráfico, which is awaiting the results of the blood and toxicology tests carried out on the driver who was seriously injured and who caused the violent head-on collision.

The driver of the car that caused the accident, a 40-year-old Norwegian woman, was admitted to Can Misses hospital with serious injuries. At the scene of the accident she could not be tested for alcohol and drugs and therefore blood tests were requested.

The woman's car crashed into a side guard and then hit head-on the Ford Focus driven by the deceased, a 42-year-old British woman and resident of the island. Also in the car was her daughter, a 6-year-old girl who remains in critical condition in the ICU of the Son Espases hospital in Mallorca. The girl was evacuated late on Wednesday from Can Misses due to the seriousness of her injuries, as this newspaper reported in yesterday's edition.

The accident

The tragic accident occurred at around 18.30 hours at kilometer 4 of the EI-400, the road to Santa Gertrudis. The driver of a Toyota C-HR lost control of the vehicle and hit a side guardrail. After this impact the car invaded the oncoming lane and collided head-on with the Ford Focus in which the deceased woman and her daughter were traveling. An Opel Meriba managed to avoid the impact and ended up overturned on the asphalt. The driver suffered minor injuries.

Firefighters had to extricate the body of the deceased woman, who was trapped in the wreckage. The girl was rescued and evacuated with severe polytraumatisms to Can Misses hospital. The driver who caused the accident was also evacuated and admitted to Can Misses.

After receiving the alert of the accident, several units of the Guardia Civil de Tráfico, four ambulances of 061, a fire department, local police of Santa Eulària, Xarxa Viària staff and four roadside assistance teams of Grúas Ibiza were mobilized to the scene of the incident.

The accident caused a great commotion among the neighbors of Santa Gertrudis and acquaintances of the victim. Friends and relatives of the deceased woman yesterday expressed their condolences on social networks and promoted an initiative to raise funds to help the injured girl and her father.
